BRAINSPOTTING
Brainspotting is a powerful therapy tool offering clients a pathway to achieve emotional well-being. Brainspotting was developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003 and is a brain-body (neurophysiological) intervention used to release and process emotions, trauma, and pains/sensations which are stored in the body.
This therapy accesses subcortical areas of the brain by using precise eye positioning and mindful processing; restoring the client to a state of homeostasis and producing rapid, effective, and regulated nervous system states.
Brainspotting relies on the attunement of the therapist to their client and provides outcomes that go beyond what talk therapy can provide.
Brainspotting can be used to treat a variety of symptoms (i.e. low mood, self-image concerns, anxiety, fight/flight response, dissociation from emotion, anger, and trauma) or can be used to expand the artistic/creative process. The options for growth and internal repair with Brainspotting are endless!

What to expect during a Brainspotting session
-
Identification of Brainspots: The therapist guides the client to locate eye positions that trigger emotional responses or activation in the body.
-
Focused Attention: The client maintains focus on the Brainspot while the therapist provides clinical guidance and a supportive presence.
-
Processing: This focused attention allows the brain to process and release the distressing emotions or trauma associated with the Brainspot.
Benefits of Brainspotting
-
Deep Processing: Accesses and resolves trauma stored in the subcortical brain, an area of the brain that is not accessed in talk therapy.
-
Enhanced Nervous System Regulation: Helps clients manage and reduce intense emotional responses.
-
Physical and Emotional Healing: Can alleviate physical symptoms associated with trauma and other adverse life events.
-
Creative Expansion: Facilitates creative expansion by accessing deeper layers of the brain, allowing for innovative and artistic growth.
-
Quick and Effective: Often leads to rapid improvements, even for long-standing issues.
-
Holistic Approach: Integrates well with other therapeutic modalities for comprehensive treatment.

“Brainspotting locates points in the client’s visual field that help to access unprocessed trauma in the subcortical brain…
It is the brain activity, especially in the subcortical brain, that organizes itself around that eye position.”
